DISTRIBUTION: This species is common and widespread throughout the British Isles.

 

WING SPAN: 34mm to 36mm.             BODY LENGTH: 30mm to 32mm .             

FLIGHT PERIOD: This species emerges as early as late April, and can be on the wing from any time after through to late August, or early September.

LARVAL PERIOD: Eggs are laid on to the  submerged parts of water side vegetation. They hatch in about two to three weeks, and take one year in the south, and two years in the north to develop into adults.

HABITAT: Habitats are most types of wetland, including drainage ditches, acidic moor land bogs, pools, ponds, lakes. However it appears to avoid fast flowing streams and rivers.

FOOD PLANT/S: Various species of invertebrates.        STATUS: Resident.
