PICTURE: Rufous Minor, Farsley, Pudsey, West Yorkshire, July 2015.

DISTRIBUTION: The Rufous Minor and the previous two species, are widespread throughout the British Isles, and are fairly common residents. Only the Rufous minor is less common in Scotland, being confined south Britain, and is quite localised. They are variable in colour, and usually the only reliable method of separating the three species is by examining the genitalia.

WING SPAN: 23mm to 29mm.                                   STATUS: Resident.

FLIGHT PERIOD: These species are single brooded, and the usual flight period is from late May  through to July, and mid June to July for the Rufous Minor. Moths will come to light, and sugar.

LARVAL PERIOD: Caterpillars of this species can be found from around August to April or May of the following spring. They feed inside in the roots and stems of various grasses.

HABITAT: A wide range of habitats with wild grasses. Such examples are embankments, road side verges, gardens and allotments, waste ground, river banks, cliff tops and sand hills.

FOOD PLANT/S: The grasses that are known as food plants include  Cocksfoot, Reed Canary-grass, and probably many other species of grass.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Some of the Rosy, Tawny, and Marbled Minor and Rufous Minor variations are quite similar. The flight period of all three overlaps some what, and this further complicates the identification of each species.
