DISTRIBUTION: This species is common, but localised in southern and eastern England. It is also a resident and extends as far north as Yorkshire. Outside Essex it is mainly a coastal species. There is not much variation in this species, though occasional specimens have faint brown streaks on the fore wings.

 

WING SPAN: 36 to 42mm.                                             STATUS: Resident.

 

FLIGHT PERIOD: Moths are single brooded, and fly during July and August. Some years they are so plentiful they are considered as pests. Adult moths come freely to light, and can often be seen during daylight crowded around the light source. Also moths are often found during the day, in the open resting on bushes, fences, walls etc.

 

LARVAL PERIOD: September to May, at first in communal webs in which they hibernate as small larvae. In the late spring they start to disperse and are found out in the open on the food plants. They can reach plague proportions in good years.

 

HABITAT: Habitats include hedgerows, parks, gardens, coastal sand dunes etc.

FOOD PLANT/S: Sea Buckthorn, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Plum, Sallow and other deciduous tree's and shrubs are the food plants for this species.
