DISTRIBUTION: This species is not as common as its name suggests, and has under gone a serious declined in recent years. It is a widely distributed  resident, through out most of the British Isles. Adult butterflies have a wingspan of about 29mm to 36mm.

 

WING SPAN: 29mm to 36mm.                                   STATUS: Resident.

 

FLIGHT PERIOD: This butterfly is double brooded, and adults are on the wing from late May to early June, and again during August and September. Habitats can be almost any sheltered sunny place where the food plants grow.

 

LARVAL PERIOD: When mature the caterpillars are up to about 13mm in length, and plump. They hatch from the almost spherical white eggs.  Larvae are green, wrinkled and have a dark green line along the back, and whitish to greenish white lines along the sides. Pupation takes place on the ground at the base of the food plant, and the chrysalis is green.

 

HABITAT: Disused railways, waste ground, commons, parks, roadside verges, down land, woodland edges and clearings are amongst the many types of place this species favours.

FOOD PLANT/S: Food plants for the caterpillars are Birds-foot Trefoil, Common Restharrow, Black Medick, it has been suggest that they will eat other forms of trifoliate such as Clover.

SIMILAR SPECIES:  Silver-studded Blue, and the larger Chalkhill Blue. Also Northern Brown and Brown Argus are similar to some specimens of the Common Blue female.
