DISTRIBUTION: This species is a fairly common resident in England, Wales, Ireland and some northern parts of Scotland. After being on the decline for many years, this species is making a remarkable come back over the last two to three decades. Adult butterflies have a wingspan of about 46mm to 52mm, and later broods tend to be darker in colour.

 

WING SPAN: 46mm to 56mm.                                   STATUS: Resident.

 

FLIGHT PERIOD: This butterfly is triple brooded most years, and the first brood are on the wing in late April and May. The second brood from during June and July, the third brood in August and September.

LARVAL PERIOD: Eggs are pale and spherical and are laid singly on, the food plants. In spring and autumn they tend to lay on plants in more open situations, and in high summer in more shaded area's. When mature the larvae are yellowish green with a white bordered dark green stripe along the back, and stripes along the sides. The food plants are various species of grass including. Cocks-foot, Yorkshire Fog, and False Brome. The pupae are attached to grass or plant stems, and are green. This butterfly over winters as a small larvae.

 

HABITAT: Habitats include woodland rides, and glades, also in parks, gardens, and any open wooded area's.

FOOD PLANT/S: The food plants are various species of grass including. Cocks-foot, Yorkshire Fog, and False Brome.
